Interviewer: You were the first ophthalmologist in Los Angeles to perform the Acrysof ReSTOR IOL procedure. Can you tell us about this innovation and its significance in cataract surgery?
Dr. Arthur Benjamin: The Acrysof ReSTOR IOL procedure was a significant advancement in cataract surgery, allowing for better visual outcomes for patients. This procedure involves implanting a multifocal lens that can provide clear vision at various distances, reducing the need for glasses after surgery. Being the first in Los Angeles to offer this procedure was a milestone. It was also the first time in history that Medicare allowed patients to choose a premium treatment at their own expense, which was a groundbreaking change in medicine. This shift has paved the way for many advancements across all fields of medicine and surgery, allowing patients more control over their treatment options and outcomes.
