Intralase Achieves one Million
Blade-FREE LASIK Procedures

Intralase® – ALL LASER NO RAZOR

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (ker-a-toe-my-loosis) and is a two-step procedure that reshapes your cornea to allow light to properly focus on the retina.

We know the decision to have LASIK surgery is a big one, so we take great care to determine what’s best for you as our patient. That’s why we offer blade-free LASIK treatment using the IntraLase method in Beverly Hills.

Every LASIK eye surgery starts with Step One—the creation of a corneal flap. Doctors have traditionally performed Step One using a hand-held device with an oscillating metal blade, called a microkeratome. The IntraLase laser is over 100 times more accurate* than a microkeratome when used in Step One of LASIK eye surgery The flap is important for rapid healing, greater comfort and better vision. If it is too thick, too thin, or irregular, it could affect the quality of your vision.

How does it work?

Every LASIK eye surgery starts with Step One—the creation of a corneal flap. Beverly Hills doctors have traditionally performed Step One using a hand-held device with an oscillating metal blade, called a microkeratome.

IntraLase makes Step One your first step to all that better vision brings by replacing the hand-held microkeratome blade with a silent, computer-guided laser.

In Step One a micro-thin flap is created. Thousands of laser pulse bubbles are connected together in a raster pattern to separate the flap from the cornea.

The Intralase process from start to finish takes approximately 45 seconds.

The surgeon then lifts the flap to allow for treatment by the excimer laser. When treatment is complete, the flap is repositioned.

In Step Two, the flap is open so that an excimer laser can be used on the inner cornea to correct your vision. The excimer laser has brought incredible safety and precision to eye surgery. One pulse of the excimer laser removes 0.25 microns of tissue, which is almost 300 times thinner than a typical human hair. Your flap is then returned to its original position where it seals without stitches.

What is an excimer laser?

The excimer laser is an FDA approved cold (non-heat generating) laser, which allows precise removal of tissue (for reshaping the corneal surface) without thermal damaging effects to adjacent tissue. The Excimer laser is an extraordinarily precise laser, which sculpts the surface of the cornea using invisible, high-energy wavelengths of light. The central cornea may thus be made either steeper or flatter depending on pre-existing refractive error. One may think of the Excimer laser as an instrument capable of reshaping the cornea in a fashion similar to that of placing a contact lens permanently on the cornea.

The precision of the Excimer laser is demonstrated with its ability to remove just 0.25 microns of tissue in a single pulse; that is, 1/200th of a human hair or 39 millionths of an inch in just 12 billionths of a second!

Why is it Better?

  • With the precision of the laser, you can now have greater assurance of a safer procedure and an excellent result.
  • The IntraLase laser is over 100 times more accurate* than a microkeratome when used in Step One of LASIK eye surgery
  • IntraLase virtually eliminates the severe sight threatening complications seen with the microkeratome, improving safety and precision while providing predictably better visual results for the patient.
  • IntraLase is the most sophisticated and accurate technology for corneal flap creation available today and has given many patients greater confidence and assurance in choosing laser vision correction.
